Predictive measures to guide therapy following pulmonary embolism
Team CT (Computed tomography) is applying image analysis techniques to help radiologists find small clots in computed tomography pulmonary angiographies, and to evaluate the risk of death for patients suffering from pulmonary embolism, based on the stress that the illness puts in the patients’ hearts.

The CAD-PE challenge
Team CT and their collaborators in Madrid and Boston are developing a method for computer aided detection of pulmonary embolisms. The current standard for screening misses as many as 10% of threats. They invite you to join the CAD-PE Challenge to help improve detection techniques that could save thousands of lives each year.
A pulmonary (thrombo)-embolism (PE) refers to the situation when a portion of a blood clot becomes lodged in a pulmonary artery. PE affects between 300,000-600,000 Americans every year and results in 12,000-80,000 deaths/ year.
Computed Tomography Pulmonary Angiogram (CTPA) is the reference standard in imaging of pulmonary emboli. However, radiologists miss visible emboli in 3-10% of cases [2,3,4]. Delay of treatment or lack of treatment results in increased morbidity and mortality . Computer Aided Detection (CAD) systems to detect PE exist , but do not yield adequate specificity for their use in clinical practice  and increase read time . This challenge is designed to foster research in the field of CAD for PE and to provide an objective benchmark with which to compare different algorithms of CAD for PE.
